This is an interpretation of Church Dolls children used to have in church to play with in times past. Toys were scarce, so Mommies and Grandmothers made these soft folk dolls for children to play with. They were sometimes made using mother’s best embroidered hanky or dad’s large white handkerchiefs. They were also known as “Pew Babies” and “Sugar Babies”...mothers or grandmothers would put sugar cubes or candy in the head portion and give them to the kids to suck on during church service. Dolls helped occupy the children; if they were dropped no sound was heard and the church service would not be disrupted.

CHURCH DOLLS

A child’s difficult task of sitting still during an endless sermon is eased by a small cloth bundle in Mom’s purse. A trio of cloth dolls will dance on the pews all through the gospel, operated only by the child’s imagination.
